Rhizome publishes white paper on variable media preservation

Ben Fino-Radin of Rhizome has published a plan to keep the organization’s venerable collection of digital art alive in the foreseeable future. The scheme builds on previous research by Richard Rinehart and Still Water’s Forging the Future coalition, of which Rhizome was a founding partner.

Rhizome was involved in the creation of Forging’s Variable Media Questionnaire early on, but their new plan aims to take advantage of a new feature under construction by Still Water Senior Researchers John Bell and Craig Dietrich. This new platform-agnostic API, called the Metaserver, will create dynamic links between the ArtBase and Questionnaire, keeping participating organizations from reinventing the wheel and ensuring harmony between the two complementary projects.

Today I am pleased to announce the publication of a paper that documents the past, present, and future preservation practices of Rhizome’s archive, the ArtBase. This paper is the synthesis of years of research conducted by Rhizome and other leaders of digital preservation, in and outside of art institutions. What follows is an attempt to summarize a few key points. The paper in its entirety is available here: Sustainable Preservation Practices and the Rhizome ArtBase
